Rudraksha Mala

A Rudraksha Mala is a string of sacred Rudraksha beads, traditionally 108 beads plus one Guru bead (also called Bindu or Meru), which marks the beginning and end of the japa cycle. It is worn around the neck or used for meditation and mantra chanting, and is believed to connect the wearer with divine energy.

The number 108 is considered sacred in Vedic tradition - it represents the 108 energy lines converging at the heart chakra. The extra Guru bead marks the completion of one full round of japa. You should not cross the Guru bead while chanting; instead, reverse direction to begin a new round.

Wearing a Rudraksha Mala is believed to calm the mind, reduce stress and blood pressure, improve focus and meditation, and protect the wearer from negative energies. The 5 Mukhi beads used in most malas represent Lord Shiva in his Kalagni Rudra form and are safe and beneficial for everyone.

Anyone can wear a Rudraksha Mala - men, women, and children of any age. No specific horoscope or ritual qualification is needed, especially for the 5 Mukhi mala. It is ideal for students, professionals, and spiritual seekers alike.

Purify the mala with clean water or raw milk, then chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times before wearing it for the first time, preferably on a Monday morning. Wear it touching the skin, and remove it while bathing, sleeping, or visiting impure places if you prefer.

Traditionally, it is recommended to keep a separate mala for japa (chanting) and one for wearing, so the japa mala retains its focused energy. However, if you have only one mala, treat it with respect, keep it clean, and it can serve both purposes.

Clean the beads monthly with lukewarm water and a soft brush, dry them fully, and apply a few drops of sandalwood or olive oil to prevent cracking. Store the mala in a clean cloth or wooden box, and keep it away from perfumes and chemicals.
